Unbreakable
Laws – and Rules
Believe
it or not, there are unbreakable laws. In the
present era when even the American president
breaks laws and ignores rules willy-nilly, we
might think quite otherwise. But then, this essay
is about laws which courts and lawyers do not
adjudicate.
We might begin with the Law of Love which is
fundamental to our system since “God is Love.”
But, that Law lies beyond this writer’s knowledge
and ability to fully address at this time.
However, we can look at a great unbreakable law
which has been relatively ignored in the West
until recent times. That is the Law of Justice and
Rebirth aka Karma and Reincarnation which is
actually key to the Law of Love, as we shall see
along the way.
Westerners often lean on Christian teachings which
have come down in a somewhat distorted matter into
the present days. Most Christians then largely
believe that, “You live your life, die, and go to
heaven or to some other unspeakable place to pass
eternity.”
But, early Christian thinkers including Origen,
Clement of Alexandria, and Valentinus held beliefs
related to pre-existence and transmigration aka
reincarnation of souls. Those beliefs were held by
Gnostics and others. The wider church and its
leaders rejected the teaching in favor of
doctrines of a single life, resurrection, and
final judgment. It seems clear that this stance
helped to keep power and control of human lives in
the hands of the church hierarchy rather than
individual souls.
Jewish mystical traditions, such as Kabbalah,
discuss reincarnation. Ancient Greek philosophical
traditions incorporated ideas of the soul's
transmigration. Over the ages, Hindu and Buddhist
teachings have given important place to Karma and
Rebirth. Into the present day, estimates suggest
around 20-30% of the global population believes in
reincarnation. And surprisingly in the United
States, a recent survey found 33% of adults
believe in reincarnation.
The renowned French writer-philosopher Voltaire
said generations ago, “It is not more surprising
to be born twice than once; everything in nature
is resurrection.”
Still, the “one man – one life” interpretation
took favor even while Jesus in Matthew 11 told
that John the Baptist is “Elijah who was to come.”
Then, Jesus’s disciples asked if a blind man had
sinned before birth in John 9. The Master didn’t
answer them directly about reincarnation but
turned to say that, “this happened that God might
be displayed in him.”
In Matthew 26, when Peter drew a sword to defend
Jesus during his arrest, Jesus rebuked him and
said, “Put your sword in its place, for all who
take the sword will perish by the sword.”
More broadly the New Testament in Galatians 6
declares, “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked,
for whatever a man so that he will also reap.”
The world is governed by Cause and Effect. There
are no accidents – nothing happens by chance.
Through the Law of Attraction and the Law of
Karma, what we send out, comes back to us. But,
Instant Karma is rare. It may take centuries for
us to reap what we have sown.
The universe has innate memory which magically
retains the temperament with which actions are
taken. Then, it eventually stages reward as well
as retribution to bring justice into
manifestation. From an eternal point of view those
effects play out in the perfect times, places and
persons.
There are, in fact, Lords of Karma – called the
Lipika – in the inner realms who record and
oversee all happenings upon planet Earth. Those
ethereal Beings assure that Truth, Beauty and
Goodness ultimately reign supreme.
What we give out to others – from the least and
poorest to the greatest and most powerful – comes
back to us. In so doing, the Law of Love is
fulfilled.
And, the Golden Rule found in all traditions thus
finds its culmination. “Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you.”
The Golden Rule, as generally recited in the West,
amounts to the bright and shiny side of the coin
called the Law of Justice and Rebirth.
Several versions of the Golden Rule which are
given in the likes of, “Do not do unto others what
you would not have done unto you,” point toward
the Karmic imperative: “Judge not, lest ye be
judged.” The bad as well as the good which we do
assuredly returns to us.
So when we see the rich and powerful breaking
laws, flaunting rules, and ignoring social norms,
we can be assured that they will meet their errors
and abuses in full face some day down the road.
Winston Churchill once remarked that, “It is
conceivable that I might well be reborn as a
Chinese coolie. In such case I should lodge a
protest.” If Sir Winston mistreated anyone even a
coolie in the course of his recent lifetime, then
in a future time ...
Fortunately, humans grow and evolve individually
and collectively. We slowly but assuredly learn to
treat others with decency and honesty and
eventually honor and love – if for no other reason
than realizing that what we send out for good or
ill surely returns to us in due time.
Inevitably however long it takes, we will fulfill
the charge given long ago –
“Love one another, as I have
loved you.”
John 13:34
“And throughout
all eternity, I forgive you and you forgive me.”
William Blake
